The Wintoon Fly Fishing Club features 6 miles of private, pristine water on the Neversink River near Claryville, New York.
The historic waters are fabled in the annals of New York fly fishing and are located just 100 miles from New York City.
The membership is kept to a limited number so as to insure that there are never crowded fishing conditions.
A beautiful 4 bedroom Club House is located about mid way on the lease, and features 3 fireplaces, 6 beds, LR, Kit, Screen porch and 2 bathrooms.
The Wintoon Fly Fishing Club, Inc. (WFFC) was founded in late 2007 when one of the present Directors was offered a unique opportunity to establish a private, limited-member, fly fishing club and to lease 5.8 miles of privately owned water on the Neversink River together with a cottage to use as a Club House. Thus, the Wintoon Fly Fishing Club was established.
The water is fabled in the annals of the history of Catskill fly fishing. Almost all of the water of the Neversink above the reservoir remains in private hands. Much has been written about the WFFC’s waters and about how the 3000 acres encompassing the river was acquired.
Over time floods and freshets have altered the course of the water through the property, and as one pool or run is destroyed, others are formed.
When compared with the Beaverkill River below Roscoe where it is joined by the Willowemoc Creek, the WFFC water can best be described as a small and intimate river (at normal water height ranging from 10ft. to 40ft. in width) but with amazingly deep pools for a river this size, before it joins with its fellow East Branch in Claryville to form the main Neversink River.
A fine description of the WFFC water can be found in the late Leonard M. Wright Jr’s book Neversink - One Angler’s Intense Exploration of a Trout River. Wright fished these waters in the 1970’s and 80’s and his piscatorial experiences and love affair with the water are eloquently described in his book.
The water is best fished with a fly rod not exceeding 8 feet, with 7 ½ ft. rod being more versatile. A floating line of 4 or 5 weight is more than ample with long leaders when fishing the silky glides and mirror faced pools. Stealth is necessary more than ever when fishing such gin clear water. The water supports a healthy population of native brook trout and some native browns. The Club’s has implemented an annual stocking program of both brown and brook trout.
The club’s water includes over a dozen pools joined together by delightful deep runs and babbling riffles, the co-founders were unanimous in their view that the Wintoon Fly Fishing Club should have a small limited membership with generous guest privileges available to its members. To this end, the co-founders decided that they would attempt to operate the Club with no more than 25 members and to later review this based upon experience.
Members and their guests may fish using fly rod and artificial fly only from April 1st to October 15th every year, although the very cold waters on our section of the river, generally don’t provide much “catching” until the end of May.
